The Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, responsible for the management and regulation of groundwater resources across the country. Established in 1997, CGWA formulates policies, guidelines, and strategies for the sustainable development and conservation of groundwater, ensuring equitable and efficient water use.
CGWA regulates groundwater extraction through permission systems, monitoring the extraction activities, especially in over-exploited areas. The authority works to prevent groundwater depletion, encourages rainwater harvesting, and promotes sustainable practices to safeguard the country’s vital water resources for future generations.
